What’s the difference between an IRS “audit” and an IRS “examination”?

Nothing. They mean the same thing: the IRS has questions about something on your tax return and would like information from you to help them figure out if it needs to be changed.

What do I do?

Read the IRS notice slowly and carefully. Then send the IRS all the information they ask for by the deadline on the notice.

What if I need help?

If you’re not sure how to respond to the IRS or what a notice means, ask for help. You can apply for assistance from the Low-Income Taxpayer Project here or from the Taxpayer Advocate Service here.
