Justice in Aging Project
The Justice in Aging Project of NH Legal Assistance is a statewide program available to NH residents who are at least 60 years old.
New Hampshire Legal Assistance is a non-profit law firm offering free legal services to older adults and eligible low-income persons. The Justice in Aging Project (JIAP) is the program within NH Legal Assistance that provides free legal services. JIAP advocates provide eligible older adults with legal representation at hearings or in court.
Advocates are also available to meet with community groups to provide education and discuss legal issues affecting older adults.
Will the Justice in Aging Project lawyers represent me?
If you are 60 years of age or older, you may be eligible for the services of the Justice in Aging Project. There are no income and asset limits; however, the program is designed to help low-income, isolated and/or institutionalized older persons.
What kinds of legal issues can the Justice in Aging Project (JIAP) help with?
Lawyers and Paralegals on the Justice in Aging Project help older adults with various civil matters affecting individuals 60 years and older.
The following legal problems are among those typically faced by our clients:
Consumer Debt Collection/ Financial Exploitation
- Harassing phone calls and/or letters from debt collectors
- Unfair and deceptive practices by debt collector
- Lawsuits filed by creditors or debt collectors
- Protected income exempt from collection: e.g. Social Security/SSI benefits, unemployment compensation, and more
- Improper use of an older adult’s funds or property
Housing /Property Taxes
- Evictions/ Unsafe Conditions
- Housing Discrimination Issues
- Section 8 or Public Housing Terminations/Denials
- Mortgage Foreclosure
- Mobile Home Park Issues
- Property Tax Relief
Nursing Home/Assisted Living
- Nursing home/assisted living residents’ rights
- Transfers or discharges from a current facility

Although we do accept donations, our services are free for any New Hampshire resident who is at least 60 years old.
