Insurance Coverage for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

People with mental illness often have trouble finding treatment and ways to pay for it. Mental health parity laws encourage health insurance plans to treat individuals with mental health issues the same way as they treat individuals with physical health issues. New laws protect access to addiction or mental health care. So, it is likely your health insurance company will approve and pay for the services you need.

Get started

  1. Call your insurance company at the number on the back of your insurance card to find a provider in your network.

  2. Ask your provider to help you find the addiction or mental health care services you need.

  3. Use the NH Alcohol and Drug Treatment Locator (MISSING LINK. CURRENT BROKEN LINK: https://www.nhtreatment.org/) to find someone who treats addiction or to find treatment options.

  4. Ask your provider to authorize services.

If your insurance company refuses to pay for your addiction or mental health care services

  1. If your insurance company refuses to pay for your addiction or mental health care services, denial of coverage, get help and ask for an appeal. Appeal quickly. This is how you and your provider fight a denial of coverage. Appeals are free.

  2. Get help with your appeal from your provider or the New Hampshire Insurance Department 1-800-852-3416.
